A standard 52-card deck is used to play Rummy 9, and the game starts with each player receiving a certain number of cards—usually nine. One card is dealt face-up to begin the discard pile, while the remaining cards make up the draw pile.
  • It is important for players to become acquainted with the different sets & sequences that can be created with different ranks and suits. For example, three cards in the same suit can be arranged in a sequence, like 5-6-7 of hearts or 10-J-Q of spades. Three or four cards of the same rank, such as three kings or four aces, can be combined to form sets.
  • Players alternately draw from the discard or draw piles in an effort to create legitimate card combinations. A set (three or four cards of the same rank) or a sequence (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit) can both be considered valid combinations. Prior to declaring a Rummy hand, players must always have at least one valid combination in their hand, which is one of the main rules of Rummy 9. Because of this, players must strategically construct their hands to avoid having high-point cards when someone else declares. Players should also be aware that each card has a specific value; numbered cards are worth their face value, face cards are worth ten points, and aces are worth one point.
