- How Does the Bad Beat Jackpot Stack Up?
A massive bad beat jackpot at The Lodge Card Club in Round Rock, Texas finally went off Tuesday night, and it paid out approximately $290,000 total, the biggest ever in the state.
The hand occurred in a $1/$2/$5 pot-limit Omaha game with two players flopping a straight flush.
A bad beat jackpot nearly hit at the same room in August for $118,000, but the hand ended in a true bad beat due to some unique rules.
Players must use both cards in no-limit hold'em and lose with quad tens or better. The BBJ at The Lodge Card Club also applies to PLO and Big-O games, but the rules are stricter as the best hand must have hit on the flop, and a straight flush must lose the hand.
In the case of the aforementioned teaser bad beat jackpot, one player flopped a straight flush against a better straight flush, but since the royal flush hit on the river, it nullified the BBJ as the best hand was made on the river.
Texas Poker Bad Beat Jackpot Details
There would be no soul-crushing royal flush on the river this time around. The bad beat jackpot finally hit at the Texas poker room co-owned by Doug Polk, Brad Owen, and Andrew Neeme.
Kim Fortini (Stone), a dealer at The Lodge Card Club, was first to share the news on X, which she learned from her husband, Hayden Fortini.

The memorable hand had a board of 3♣4♣5♣J♥5♥. One player held A♣2♣K♠6♠for a losing straight flush against A♦K♦7♣6♣, a superior straight flush. But the player who lost the pot certainly wasn't complaining about the cooler. The card room's BBJ rules state that 50% of the jackpot goes to the player with the losing hand, in this case it would be approximately $145,000, while the winning hand receives 25% of the pot, or about $73,000. All other players actively playing in the room at the time split the remainder of the pot.
The bad beat jackpot at The Lodge Card Club, Texas' largest poker room, is different than most other card rooms in that it doesn't grow from rake collected as that would be illegal in the Lone Star State. Polk's club instead increases the BBJ, which resets to $100,000, by $1,000 each day from its own money. Video of the bad beat jackpot hand was released on X.

How Does the Bad Beat Jackpot Stack Up?
The hand at the Austin poker club was the largest bad beat jackpot in Texas live poker history. But the biggest in world history took place in August 2023 at Playground in Quebec, Canada for CAD $2.6 million (USD $1.9 million at the time). Another massive bad beat jackpot hit at the same card room last October for CAD $2.2 million (USD $1.7 million at the time).
Major tournament poker is heading to The Lodge Card Club starting Feb. 16 with the Lodge Championship Series, which features 11 tournaments. The $3,000 buy-in Main Event kicking off Feb. 26, guarantees at least $1 million in the pot and offers seven Day 1 starting flights.
