Online and live poker crusher Chris Moorman is in a good position to reach the World Poker Tour World Championship (WPTWC) final table for the second straight year.
The $10,400 buy-in tournament, which started with 2,392 entries, played down to the Sweet 16 on Thursday night at Wynn Las Vegas. Michael Berk entered the Day 4 session with the chip lead. But he busted in 31st place for $101,000.
Moorman Ready to Win it All this Time
Moorman bagged the Day 4 chip lead at 30,600,000 with the blinds returning to 125,000/250,000. He finished off the day by eliminating Glen Keogh in 17th place ($176,000) when pocket jacks bested top pair. All remaining players are guaranteed at least $176,000, but the winner on Saturday will take home $3,138,900.
The chip leader who has over $9 million in live tournament cashes, according to The Hendon Mob, finished fourth in this same tournament one year ago, good for a career-best $2,095,300 payday. While he's hoping to close it out this year, he isn't getting ahead of himself.
"There's still so much poker to be played," Moorman told PokerNewsfollowing Day 4. "Obviously, I played seven days last year, so it was even longer. So it's just more of the same, enjoy the moment and see what happens, no pressure. Whatever happens, you know, it's already been a great score, an early Christmas present."
Moorman couldn't quite capture the title last year — Dan Sepiol did for $5.3 million. But he is a World Poker Tour (WPT) champion. The poker legend from England won the $10,000 buy-in WPT LA Poker Classic at Commerce Casino almost 11 years ago for $1,015,460. He has fond memories of that life-changing day.
"It was actually probably the hardest time I've had in poker," Moorman said of his 2014 WPT title. "I dropped down in stakes for a year, dropped all my horses and lost some money myself. I kind of had to rebuild my bankroll. I came into that live tournament after a year off and just ran really hot and, yeah, it was a marquee kind of win."
Gumz In, Badziakouski Out
Mikita Badziakouski spent part of Day 4 atop the leaderboard. But the Belarusian high roller with over $58 million in live tournament cashes fell fast and was eliminated in 19th place for $176,000 about a half hour before the session concluded. Niall Farrell (55th place for $71,000), Mark Seif (51st for $71,000), and Michael Rossitto (39th place for $101,000) were among the players who busted on Thursday.

- Players must go into every game with assurance, trusting that they can make wise choices based on their cards & their opponents' moves. This mental toughness aids not only in strategic decision-making but also in handling the emotional turbulence that can come with competitive play. Players who maintain composure are better able to assess situations and produce better results. 24-12-26
- Also, cultivating a winning mindset means taking lessons from both successes and setbacks. After every session, players should evaluate their performance because every game offers a chance for improvement. One can learn a lot about their playing style & decision-making processes by examining what went well and what didn't. 24-12-26
- If a player makes a declaration too soon, they may not have enough valid melds to protect themselves, and if they wait too long, they may lose out on opportunities as opponents get closer to their own declarations. Declaring when you have at least two or three strong melds formed, along with a few extra cards that are simple to incorporate into new melds, is a good general rule. When choosing whether to declare, players should also take the current state of play into account. It could be prudent to declare sooner rather than later if opponents seem to be getting close to finishing their hands or if they have been regularly selecting particular cards from the discard pile. 24-12-26

- Bluffing, which is the deliberate discarding of cards that could give opponents false information about one's true intentions or hand composition, is one such tactic. Players may cause confusion & mislead opponents about their own strategies if they discard a card that could potentially complete an opponent's meld while keeping other valuable cards. Gaining an intuitive understanding of how opponents behave and pattern throughout the game is another sophisticated tactic. This involves counting the speed at which they remove particular cards from the discard pile or the frequency with which they alter their approach in response to what other players are doing. 24-12-26
- Rummy Gold 51 is all about building melds and sets, and having good strategies in place can significantly increase a player's chances of winning. Prioritizing the formation of sequences over sets whenever feasible is one basic strategy. Usually simpler to finish than sets of three or four cards of the same rank, sequences are made up of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Players can increase the flexibility of their combinations and increase their adaptability as new cards are drawn by concentrating on sequences. Holding onto high-value cards until they can be combined to form a set or sequence is another successful tactic. 24-12-26

- Early discarding of high-value cards may be alluring, but if players are unable to form valid melds by the end of the round, they may be subject to penalties. Rather, players ought to evaluate their hand on a regular basis and think about how they can best use these valuable cards in combination with other cards they draw during the game. With this strategic approach, risk is reduced while potential points are maximized. 24-12-26
